Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir

Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir has many years of experience leading expeditions in high-altitude mountain environments and polar regions. She has led expeditions in the Himalayas and across the Greenland Ice Sheet, skied solo to the South Pole, and worked in Antarctica as a camp manager and in safety-related roles. Vilborg holds an M.Sc. in Disaster Management and an MBA, and in recent years has worked as a consultant in risk management, safety, and management systems. She has also focused in particular on the relationship between adventure tourism and global warming, and on the challenges that changes in the natural environment create for safety and operations.

Places that were once known only to experienced mountaineers can become highly sought-after destinations almost overnight, while achievements that once required years of experience can turn into “bucket list” goals. This presentation will explore the influence of social media and influencers on the development of adventure tourism and mountaineering. Where is the line between social media inspiring people to pursue outdoor activities and adventure, and creating an unrealistic picture of conditions, ability, and risk?
