Jón Svanberg Hjartarson is the CEO of Neyðarlínan (112). He has worked in emergency response and civil protection for many years, including as Executive Director of ICE-SAR (the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue), a specialist with the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management under the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, and a police officer in the Westfjords.
Jón has also been active in search and rescue teams from a young age. His extensive experience spans a wide range of emergency response roles, from day-to-day operations and cooperation between response agencies to leading and participating in search and rescue and civil protection operations.
Emergency response depends on cooperation and mutual trust. People with different backgrounds, experience and roles need to be able to share tasks and responsibilities, ask for help and pass on their knowledge – regardless of personal opinions, position or who thinks they know best. This presentation asks whether we can really trust others with our tasks – and whether we dare give them the space to get the job done. Where is the line between support and interference, between oversight and micromanagement? Can we pass on experience and knowledge without becoming the back-seat driver who cannot let go of the wheel? The chair who cannot step down because they “can’t find anyone” to take over – or the manager who cannot delegate because nobody else will do it the way they would? These questions will be explored through the human side of emergency response – from everyday communication, cooperation and leadership to high-pressure operations where time is short, the margin for error is small and lives may be at stake.
