Þorbjörg Petrea Pálsdóttir has been a member of the Ársæll Search and Rescue Team and has served in Icelandic search and rescue since 2008.
Following the volcanic unrest in Grindavík, she served as an Operations Manager within the Field Command, with the objective of ensuring continuity of operations in the affected area. In this role, she gained extensive experience in incident management, decision-making under pressure, and coordinating field operations.
Today, she works in the Operations Division of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) while continuing to be involved in operations related to Grindavík, where she applies her experience and expertise to ongoing response and recovery efforts.
This lecture focuses on the many challenges and operational tasks that have arisen on the Reykjanes Peninsula as a result of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions in recent years. The events are presented in chronological order, with each eruption examined individually, highlighting its specific impacts, damage, and operational challenges. Topics include evacuations, volcanic gas pollution, tourist safety, infrastructure protection, and the wide range of tasks faced by emergency responders, including rescue teams. Designed specifically for international visitors, the lecture provides valuable insight into how Iceland has managed and responded to one of the most significant volcanic and seismic events in its recent history.
