We are members of the Sæbjörg Search and Rescue Team in Flateyri. We were chair and vice-chair when the avalanches struck on 14 January 2020. That night, two large avalanches came down, both of which went over the avalanche defence barriers. One hit the harbour and swept away the boats, while the other struck a house where a teenage girl was buried.

The Night the Defences Failed Us — Yet Still Saved Lives We will look back on that night and the days that followed, from the first emergency call-outs to the rescue operations, and discuss how the event affected us and the community.

We will describe that night as we experienced it, how the rescue operation unfolded, and what happened in the days that followed. What makes the presentation particularly interesting is that although the defences partly failed, they also saved many lives. We will discuss what we learned and how the event changed the way we think about safety and preparedness.
