Marcia Koenig

Marcia Koenig has been in dog search and rescue training since 1972 in the United States. She has responded to disaster situations such as plane crashes, mud slides, fire scenes, tornados, hurricanes, snow, and water with her SAR dogs. (No volcanoes, but has worked on volcanic soils.) Marcia and her husband, Andy Rebmann, have taught search dog classes all over the world. She has recently retired from working her dog, but still writes, teaches and consults with search dog organizations.

This presentation is designed for the dog handler who would be among the first to respond to a disaster situation. They would arrive before the Urban SAR teams. I will cover what skills are needed to respond and how to do so safely. These skills are also useful in other search settings. Topics covered: Scent theory, Safety, Alerts, Agility, Building search, Rubble search, and Live person search.
