Dr. Barbara Olga Hild specializes in adventure tourism, safety training, and risk management in High Arctic environments. Her PhD research on guide competencies and tourist safety draws on years of field experience in Svalbard, Greenland, and Iceland. She has led the development of courses for the Greenlandic guiding school and is affiliated with the Arctic Safety Centre at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), where she works to strengthen how guides and researchers operate safely in extreme Arctic conditions.
Rescue operations in the High Arctic are shaped by similar environmental risks; however, rescue capacity and available resources vary by region. Drawing on field experience and research in Arctic safety, this lecture highlights how extreme weather, remoteness, and limited infrastructure demand high levels of competence, planning, and decision-making under pressure. It examines how risk is assessed and managed in practice, highlighting how local knowledge, training, and collaboration can enhance safety and preparedness in Arctic rescue operations. Case studies from Iceland, Svalbard, and Greenland illustrate these challenges and local solutions, including differences in rescue capacity, resource availability, and coordinated responses.
