Darryl J Macias

Dario is professor emeritus in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM), USA, and medical director for the International Mountain Medicine Center. He is faculty for the DiMM programs at UNM, Chile (GREMM), the Masters of Mountain EM (Italy), and Silverton Mountain Rescue (Colorado). He has been involved in mountain, expedition, operational and rescue medicine for some time. He has also worked with YoSAR and PGHM/iFremmont in Chamonix. He began the wilderness, austere and international emergency medicine fellowship at UNM, and is a consultant for MountainSafety.info. He is the medical director of the Khumbu Climbing Center in the Everest region, and is the section editor and podcast host for the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine journal of the Wilderness Medical Society. His mission is to help others find their path in wilderness medicine.

Minimizing hazards in the mountains with better risk decisions (and) "Alone on the Mountain: A Rescue, A Pulse, and The Cost of Survival"

Topic 1: understanding heuristics and heuristic errors, and implementing best practices during an expedition or rescue using principles from AvaLife in an interactive, scenario based presentation.

Topic 2: This case based format will demonstrate the immediate priorities in rescue and resuscitation for acute and prolonged field care, explore advanced field and hospital based care (such as ECMO), and discuss ethical considerations that could ensue after a hazardous rescue.
