Hermann Karlsson

Hermann has been a policeman in Akureyri since 1989. He took shifts for over 30 years and was shift manager from 2004 to 2021. He has been involved in numerous search and rescue projects in connection with this, and interdisciplinary cooperation between responders. Hermann is currently a chief inspector, with civil protection as a speciality. Hermann has recently attended various courses and training related to civil protection issues, both domestically and abroad and conducted by various entities. Hermann has been increasingly involved in issues relating to civil protection and operations control in the district of the Police Commissioner of North-East Iceland. As a result, Hermann is now a joint staff member of the Police Commissioner of North-East Iceland and the civil protection department of the National Police Commissioner. This is a pilot project and will be reviewed at year-end 2022.

Slush flood in River Núpá

In December 2019, a long-term rescue operation took place following the fall of an individual in Núpá in Sölvadalur. Various dangers threatened the scene and a near-accident following a sudden water/ice flooding during the operation showed weaknesses in the implementation and organization of long-term rescue operations in high-risk environments.
