Natural disasters have always been a part of life in Iceland. Volcanic eruptions, landslides, earthquakes and storms have caused numerous deaths throughout the centuries. With improved monitoring, alerts and response, we have been able to reduce serious accidents and deaths. Response plans by civil protection agencies have mostly dealt with these factors and ever since the massive increase in tourism became a reality, tourist spots in areas where natural disasters are impending have been taken into account in response plans. But are these the correct priorities? Each year, a number of tourists is seriously injured or killed on Icelandic roads. What would be done if these accidents were due to natural disasters? Wouldn’t every stone be turned? In his talk, Víðir will discuss mass accidents and “almost” accidents in recent years and consider if and how we are prepared. What lessons can be learned and are we doing everything in our power to deal with this threat and prevent accidents?
