Specialized dogs for tracking missing people (mantrailing) have been trained and practiced by a local rescue team in Hafnarfjörður, since 1960. The talk will focus on how these dogs have been used in search work and what to bear in mind on the scene so the dogs can be of best use. Þórir Sigurhansson has been involved in SAR dog training since 1989. In his work as a dog handler, Þórir has trained dogs to search in avalanches, wilderness, underwater and ruins, besides mantrailing and training for cadaver. Þórir has vast experience from various search operations with dogs, during the past three decades and also served as an instructor and examiner in wilderness and avalanche search with dogs. Þórir has been working as a dog handler for the bloodhound team of the Hafnarfjörður SAR team (BSH) for the past few yars.
