Every year, the Icelandic Police receive 200–250 search requests from child protection authorities for young people who have run away from home. Over the past four years, the Icelandic Police have run a special initiative to handle such cases. Before the initiative was launched, around one to three of these missing young people would die each year. Since the initiative began, not a single one has died. These young people are grappling with all kinds of problems, like drug and behavior issues, mental health issues, and terrible conditions at home. The Icelandic Police turns to ICE-SAR (The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue) around five times a year for help with searches. In searches for young people with drug problems, discrimination may potentially impact the response and scope of the search.
