Following a fatal accident in 2024, a professional council was formed in Vatnajökull National Park to advise tour operators and the National Park on safety in glacier and ice cave tourism. In 2026, a similar council was formed in reaction to deteriorating conditions on Sólheimajökull. This presentation outlines the challenges of operating in a highly changeable environment and fostering collaboration across operator boundaries. It also discusses how tools such as GLACIS, a collaborative platform for dynamic risk assessments, and opportunistic use of photogrammetric and LIDAR mapping can help create and improve shared situational awareness.
Stephan Mantler leads the work within Vatnajokull National Park regarding tourist safety on glaciers. He also leads corresponding work on Solheimar glacier.
