Search and rescue has always depended on the judgment of people who can read the sea, the vessel and the unfolding situation. The next generation of technology should strengthen that intuition, not replace it.This session explores how AI and decision intelligence could give SAR crews greater foresight, helping protect people, improve readiness and support better decisions under pressure, while addressing the practical questions of trust, training, cost and accountability that must be resolved along the way.
Karl Birgir Björnsson is the CEO and co-founder of Hefring Marine, an Icelandic company developing intelligent systems to optimise and analyse vessel operations. Since founding the company in 2019, he has led its growth from concept to international scale-up, with customers across defence, commercial, and unmanned maritime sectors.
