Search and rescue dogs are often facing very difficult environments on their duty: fire following an explosion, hot or cold climate depending on the site, altitude in some earthquake situations, proximity of stressfull devices or equipments, human cadavers, etc… This results in acute stresses or cumulative stress situations, with induced oxidative stress at a cellular level, and related specific pathologies. Post Traumatic Stress Disease (PTSD) also exists in dogs. The management of such consequences is mainly preventive, and will be detailed in this presentation through practical experience and thanks to dedicated research programs that focussed on how to keep the working performance of the dogs when facing a highly demanding, dangerous or stressfull situation.
