Magnús Viðar joined the Air Ground Rescue Team of Reykjavik in 2009 after two years of working on the Team as a recruit in training. Ever since he joined the Air Ground Rescue Team, Magnús has placed great emphasis on mountain search and rescue and mountaineering, and he has been a member of the first response squad of the Air Ground Rescue Team since 2011. Since 2013 Magnús has worked as a teacher of mountain search and rescue and mountaineering at the ICE-SAR Rescue School and he has taught courses in these fields in various parts of the country. Magnús has been involved with development and conceptual work in the compilation of teaching materials for mountain search and rescue with a group of other teachers, and this work is in constant development.
The lecture is about the basic course in mountain search and rescue. Each year the mountain search and rescue department of the Search and Rescue Academy gives several basic courses in this field. Our goal is to spread the knowledge throughout the country and that teams in all parts of the country will have some ability to safely carry out search and rescue operations in mountainous regions. Mountain search and rescue involve specialized skills that require a lot of work. Complex search and rescue operations in mountainous regions require a lot of human resources and equipment and often search and rescue teams must rely on support from other teams. How is this specialization achieved? What can participants expect when they attend this course and what doors will it open for them? How important is the dissemination of this knowledge across the country and is further specialization needed?
