Core element of Icelandic SAR is the unique ability to drive from rescue worker's homes, through a search programme, to victim rescue and delivery to hospital, in one fast, seamless go. This is due to a specific local road vehicle regulation exemption allowing extreme modification of 4x4s and vans to use extremely large tyres, making them extremely mobile in hostile terrain, while staying road legal. A downside is that a fully modified vehicle is extremely expensive, persistent design limitations drive running costs to extremes, and their legal use is limited to Iceland. The only answer to these limitations is to design and produce EU Road Regulation compliant vehicles purpose-made for the job. In the presentation, this process is described and the enormous potential benefits to rescue operations worldwide are outlined.
